Content Management System
Content Management System Description
A content management system (CMS) is the software used to control the content displayed in a Website. The CMS uses a database to store the content as well as all instructions for the Website.
A CMS allows you to create and edit pages in your site much the same as if you were working with a document in your favorite desktop software. You do not need to know anything about programming, HTML or any other language in order to be proficient. After a few times using the CMS you will feel comfortable creating pages, adding images, editing pages or adding more categories.
How Do I Install a CMS?
First, ask yourself if you need a CMS and database.
This list will help you with that decision.
If you have:
- more than 5 pages in the Web site and growing
- a shopping cart to sell at least a few products
- the need to edit page content often
- media that changes often
- the need to display a large number of images
If you answered yes to any part or all of the list, a CMS may be best for your Web site. The cost of hiring someone to constantly make changes to your site is enough of a reason for an alternative.
There are a few very good "open source" (free) content management systems available for anybody to use in any sort of Web site. After deciding you need to or would prefer using a CMS, you'll want to review the available software. Some are easy to administrate, and some are very difficult. Most are simply intimidating, but can be easy to manage once you have spent a few hours using the software.
Open source means it's free. That's right. You can install and use free software that works very well and aids in the professionalism of your site. Joomla! is one of the most popular open source CMS packages. In fact, Joomla! is used to control most of T.A. Garrison, LLC.
If you don't have access to cPanel (or other administrative software) that includes automatic installation software, you will have to download the compressed file for the CMS you want to install, upload it to your server, extract the contents and then follow the instructions to install. That's not as easy as it sounds.
Installation is Easy
